GLS Consulting navigation: GLS Software

GLS' greatest achievement lies in our holistic approach to the modelling and planning of municipal water, sewer and electricity infrastructure systems by the application of in-house developed high technology software and processes.

Entire city systems are modelled and integrated with related data, to produce comprehensive models and master plans, the scale of which substantially exceeds any other similar application in the Southern African industry.

Academic Involvement

GLS prides itself in maintaining a strong relationship with the academic environment.

This not only ensures permanent awareness of latest technologies but also participation in the identification and supervision of research projects relevant to our industry sector. Specific undertakings in this respect include:

  • GLS has participated in a number of research projects undertaken for e.g. the Water Research Commission jointly with the University of Johannesburg as well as the University of Stellenbosch.
  • GLS staff members, including Erik Loubser (PhD), Hanré Streicher (MBA), Leon Geustyn (PhD), Alex Sinske (PhD), Kerry Fair (MEng) and Cobus Compion (MEng), regularly act as guest lecturers at both graduate and post graduate level at the University of Stellenbosch.
  • The above GLS staff members assist in the identification and definition of post graduate theses as well as mentoring of the students performing the work on a regular basis.
  • Drs Geustyn, Loubser and Sinske have at a number of occasions acted as examiners and external promoters at post graduate level. Dr Sinske recently co-promoted a Ph.D in the Department of Logistics at the University of Stellenbosch and together with his candidate and other co-promotor was awarded the runner-up IFORS prize for Operations Research in Development.
  • GLS staff members are encouraged to pursue post graduate qualifications. Currently active in this respect are: Paula Haupt (MScEng) and André-Hugo (MScEng).

Awards

GLS Consulting was responsible for the planning, design and project management for the Upgrading of the Moddergat River Scheme in the Macassar area in Cape Town.

This project, for which GLS Consulting charged a considerably reduced fee for time related to community participation and education, was awarded the SAICE "Most Outstanding Achievement in Community-Based Projects" nationally for 2000. It also received a Gold award from the Impumelelo Innovations Awards for 2001.
